How to Clean, Polish, and Care for Acrylic Sheets the RIGHT Way

Acrylic sheets, commonly known as plexiglass, are renowned for their clarity, durability, and versatility. Acrylic sheets and plexiglass panels are widely used in a variety of applications from retail displays to home décor.

To keep your acrylic sheets, mirror acrylic sheets, and acrylic display cases in optimal condition and extend their lifespan, proper cleaning, storage, and maintenance practices are essential. This guide will walk you through the dos and don’ts of caring for your acrylic sheets and other plexiglass items.

How to Clean Acrylic Sheets: Dos and Don’ts

Cleaning acrylic sheets correctly is crucial to maintaining their clear and unblemished appearance. Here are some guidelines to ensure your acrylic stays pristine:

Dos:

#1: Use Novus Products

Novus products are the secret weapon for keeping any acrylic surface at peak condition. T&T Plastic Land carries the full line of Novus cleaners and polishing products, as well as other supplies for maintaining acrylic surfaces. Use Novus on any acrylic surface with mild to severe scratching. If you own or operate a retail store or museum, make sure to keep a supply of Novus polishes on-hand

Novus Plastic Cleaners are specifically formulated for acrylic and are highly effective in removing dirt and grime without damaging the surface. They help maintain the sheet’s clarity and shine.

NOVUS 1 - Plastic Clean & Shine: This product gently cleans all plastics without scratching and leaves a lustrous shine. It resists fogging, repels dust, and eliminates static. Ideal for regular maintenance. Apply liberally, polish in short, circular strokes, and buff to a high glaze.

NOVUS 2 - Fine Scratch Remover: Perfect for removing fine scratches and restoring faded plastics. Apply with firm, back-and-forth motion until scratches diminish, then polish in a circular motion for a smooth finish.

NOVUS 3 - Heavy Scratch Remover: For severe scratches, use this product. Polish with firm strokes, then finish with NOVUS 2 and NOVUS 1 for the best results.

#2: Opt for Mild Dish Soap and Warm Water

If specialized cleaners are not available, a mixture of mild dish soap and warm water can be used. This solution is gentle on the acrylic while effectively cleaning it.

#3: Clean with a Microfiber Cloth

Always choose a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth for cleaning. Microfiber is gentle and won’t scratch the acrylic surface, making it ideal for removing dust and fingerprints. We recommend Novus Polish Mates cleaning cloths, but any microfiber cloth will do.

#4: Wipe in a Circular Motion

Use a gentle, circular motion when wiping the surface. This helps to evenly distribute the cleaner and prevents streaks or scratches.

Don’ts:

#1: Don't Use Ammonia-Based Products

Cleaners containing ammonia, like certain glass cleaners (e.g., Windex), can cause acrylic to develop a cloudy haze or even small cracks. These should be avoided.

#2: Don’t Use All-Purpose Cleaners

Many all-purpose cleaners contain harsh chemicals that can damage the acrylic surface. Stick to products specifically designed for plastic or acrylic.

#3: Don't Use Abrasives

Avoid using abrasive cleaning pads, scouring powders, or any rough materials. These can scratch and dull the acrylic surface.

#4: Don't Use Dry Cloths

Using dry cloths or paper towels can scratch the acrylic. Always dampen your cleaning cloth slightly before use.

#5: Don't Use Aromatic Cleaners

Cleaners with strong aromatic compounds can degrade acrylic over time. Choose neutral, gentle cleaning solutions instead.

How to Store Acrylic Sheets

Proper storage is key to preventing warping, scratching, or other damage to acrylic sheets. Here’s how to store them safely:

Store Vertically at a Slight Angle for Large Sheets

Large acrylic sheets should be stored vertically at a slight angle, preferably around 10 degrees. This positioning helps prevent them from warping over time.

Lay Flat for Small Sheets

Smaller acrylic sheets can be stored flat. Ensure they are well supported and avoid any pressure that could cause them to sag or bend.

Avoid Sagging

If large sheets must be stored flat, ensure they are adequately supported to prevent sagging in the middle, which can lead to warping.

Keep Protective Papering On

Leave the protective papering on sheets you haven’t used yet. This layer helps prevent scratches and keeps the surface clean. Make sure to store unused sheets in a dry, cool place to maintain their quality.

Use Soft Padding

Place soft, non-abrasive padding between each sheet when stacking to avoid scratches and surface damage if the protective paper, or film is removed.

Cool, Dry Environment

Store acrylic sheets in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Excessive heat can cause them to warp or discolor.

Avoid Heavy Weights

Don’t stack heavy objects on top of your acrylic sheets, as this can cause pressure marks or even cracks.

Long-Term Maintenance and Care for Acrylic Sheets

Regular maintenance is essential to keep your acrylic sheets looking clear and new. Follow these tips for long-term care:

Regular Dusting

Dust your acrylic sheets regularly with a microfiber cloth to remove dirt and debris. This prevents scratches and maintains their clarity.

Polishing

For a shiny finish and to remove minor scratches, use a plastic polish designed for acrylic. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the best results.

How to Polish Scratched Acrylic

  1. For deeper scratches, start with 400-grit sandpaper on an orbital sander or any handheld sander to smooth out the scratched area.
  2. Then, use an acrylic polish compound, which often comes as a bar that you apply to a polishing wheel attached to a drill.
  3. If you don’t have access to these tools, consider flame polishing. Using a hydrogen-oxygen torch with a #4 or #5 tip, gently flame the sande area of the acrylic. Move the torch across the edge at a rate of about 3” - 4” per second in swift motions. Be careful not to overheat or hold the torch too close, as this can melt the acrylic and ruin the finish. Properly executed, flame polishing gives a clean, shiny edge that enhances the appearance of your acrylic.
  4. Safety Note: Always use caution with high heat tools. Ensure proper ventilation and take all necessary safety precautions to avoid accidents.

Avoid Chemical Exposure

Keep acrylic sheets away from harsh chemicals and solvents that could damage or discolor them.

Handle with Care

When moving or installing acrylic sheets, handle them carefully to avoid dropping or bending. Using gloves can help keep fingerprints off the surface.

Inspect Regularly

Periodically check your acrylic sheets for signs of wear or damage. Early intervention can prevent more significant issues later.
