Gold Mirror Acrylic Pedestals

Gold Mirror Acrylic Pedestals

We recently collaborated with Rentquest NYC, a full-service furniture and prop rental company specializing in custom-built and original pieces that are perfect for any event. As one of our main clientele, event companies, caterers, and planners frequently turn to us for custom fabrications that add a unique touch to their events. This time, Rentquest NYC tasked us with creating gold mirror pedestals to serve as center consoles for a high-profile event.

The Challenge of Gold Mirror Acrylic

Gold mirror acrylic is a striking material, but it comes with its own set of challenges. One of the primary difficulties is that it only comes in a 1/8" thickness. While this thickness is perfect for decorative purposes, it poses a challenge when the structure needs to support weight, especially at the size requested by the client.

To address this challenge, we devised a solution that would ensure both the beauty and functionality of the pedestals.

Fabrication Process

Our approach began with constructing a sturdy MDF (medium-density fiberboard) box to serve as the core of the pedestal. The process started with carefully measuring and cutting the wood to the exact dimensions required. Once the pieces were prepared, they were meticulously adhered and nailed together to form a solid and stable structure.

With the MDF box complete, we moved on to the next phase: cutting the gold mirror acrylic to size. Precision is key when working with acrylic sheets, especially mirror acrylic sheets, as any imperfections can be highly visible. Once the acrylic was perfectly cut, we prepared it to be laminated onto the MDF box.

To adhere the gold mirror plexi to the MDF, we used clear silicone. This choice of adhesive is critical, as most adhesives can eat away at the backing of the mirror, compromising its reflective quality. We find clear silicone, and E600 adhesive are the best as they do not eat away at the backing. Silicone, on the other hand, provides a strong bond without damaging the mirror's backing, ensuring a flawless finish.

End result

The end result was a set of stunning gold mirror pedestals that not only met but exceeded the client’s expectations. These pedestals added a touch of elegance and sophistication to the event, creating a focal point that captured the attention of all attendees. Rentquest NYC was thrilled with the outcome, and we’re proud to have contributed to the success of their event.

This project highlights our ability to fabricate wood, and overcome material challenges and deliver custom fabrications that are both functional and visually striking. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Rentquest NYC and helping our clients bring their visions to life.
